In their opening game of the 2009 season, the B-CC girls’ varsity soccer team defeated the Northwest High School Jaguars 7-0 at Northwest. It was a match in which the Barons displayed a steady defense, keen drives, and penetrating through-balls. Junior Vic Gersh put B-CC on the board three minutes into the game by taking a rebound, dribbling in from the 18-yard line, and scoring. Four minutes later, Gersh sent a crisp pass to senior Owyn Manson who found the net for the second goal. Vic Gersh made it 3-0 minutes later on an assist from sophomore midfielder Hanna Levin. Like a metronome, the B-CC scoring beat continued. Driving up the midfield, junior Alex Doll sent a pass to Owyn Manson who scored her second goal. On a repeat drive moments later, Alex Doll drilled the ball into the net to up the tally to 5-0. The final score of the half came when Hannah Levin sent a free kick at an angle cross-field to Owyn Manson who one-touched it into the goal. Goalkeepers Sasha Konownitzine and Angela White joined with defenders Mallory MacRostie, Kara Klontz, Anna Genova, Julia Hargrove, and Julia Hooks to stymie counterattacks, while steady offensive pressure was added by freshmen Caroline Khanna, Alix Emden, and Zoe Mesirow, sophomore Elena Muller, junior Zoe Thorpe, and seniors Marilyn Hucek and Kinsey Hoffman.

With the start of the second half, the Jaguars entered the field with renewed determination, but roughly 12 minutes into play, Alex Doll took a pass from Vic Gersh, went to the corner, put an elegant fake on a defender, and crossed to Owyn Manson who fired a ground ball off the inside of the post to enter the net. With the help of goalies Angela White and senior Frances Jaffe, along with field support from sophomores Amy Heaton and Nicole Parina and junior Rebecca Wenker, the Barons sealed their 7-0 victory. In all, the Barons had 16 shots, 12 shots-on-goal, and 6 corner kicks; 6 saves were made by Barons’ keepers.
