To borrow from the world of trademarks, it was a bit Teflon® and Velcro® on September 22nd when the B-CC girls’ varsity soccer team defeated a talented and deep Montgomery Blair High School 2-0 at Blair. First Teflon®: For the first 15 minutes of the game, the ball slipped off B-CC feet to find a stickier set belonging to the Blazers; in the first 7 minutes alone, Blair fired off 4 shots, keeping B-CC’s defense – Konownitzine in goal with defenders Hardgrove, Genova, Klontz, and Ward – pressed against the wall. But then the Barons began to find Velcro® in the midfield with Khanna, Hoffman, Levin, Gersh, Hucek, Mesirow, and Heaton, setting up brilliant drives by midfielder Doll and forwards Manson and Thorpe. The traction only tightened as B-CC passes stuck to their mark and drives ripped up-field. With twelve minutes remaining in the game, Alex Doll fed a ball to the outside to Vic Gersh who cut in and sent a long, arcing shot that eluded the outstretched fingers of the Blazer goalie to make it 1-0, Barons. Displaying a level of fitness that was arguably higher than that of their opponents late in the game, the Barons unleashed an unrelenting series of attacks. A spectacular one was tailored by Alex Doll who put on a series of fakes that sent defenders and the goalie in every direction but the one she shot the ball to put the second score on the board. In their 2-0 victory, the Barons had 15 shots, 11 on goal, 6 corners, and 2 saves from Konownitzine. The Blazers, in turn, had 6 shots, 2 on goal, and 2 corners while the keeper made 9 saves. For the season, the Barons stand at 5-1-0 and undefeated in division play.
